Embracing Aging: The Benefits of Retirement Communities for Single Seniors

Posted on September 19, 2024

Aging is a normal part of life, but for those who are single or widowed, it can come with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. While society often emphasizes the importance of companionship and family, there’s a world of possibility waiting at The Highlands at Wyomissing® that can enrich the lives of single seniors and enhance the aging experience.

One of the most significant benefits of living at The Highlands is its strong sense of community. For seniors who are single or widowed, the chance to connect with others can alleviate feelings of loneliness that sometimes accompany aging. Residential Life programming encourages social interaction through organized activities, clubs, and communal spaces. Residents can join a book club, participate in a gardening group, and attend social events, concerts, and lectures. There are countless opportunities to make new friends and build meaningful relationships, and there is even a community table where residents have the option of sitting with others who are also dining alone.

The Highlands prioritizes an active lifestyle, offering a variety of amenities that promote physical and mental well-being. From a state-of-the-art fitness center with a fitness instructor, a variety of exercise classes and an indoor heated saltwater swimming pool to beautiful walking trails on our 113-acres campus, there is always a way to stay active and fit.

Aging also doesn’t mean the end of learning. The Highlands provides educational and music programs, guest lectures, art exhibits, technology talks and more, encouraging residents to pursue new interests and hobbies while also engaging their minds, exploring new passions, and meeting others who are equally curious and eager to learn.

As we age, daily tasks can become more challenging. A move to The Highlands includes maintenance-free living, meaning that residents don’t have to worry about home repairs, yard work, or other chores. As an added perk, the Highlands Senior Leadership Team will even take care of all snow removal in the winter, including shoveling every resident’s car. Responsive security staff who are available 24/7 and conduct daily well-being checks give residents peace of mind, allowing them to focus on enjoying life rather than managing the burdens of homeownership.

The Highlands’ Life Care (Type A) contract gives residents access to unlimited health care services, including Aspire for Well Being® Personal Care, Nursing Care, Memory Support and Rehabilitation, while maintaining the same monthly service fee no matter what level of care is needed.  Our Modified (Type B) contract is another option for those who have long-term care insurance or who are interested in limited health care services. These contracts can be particularly beneficial for single individuals who may not have family nearby. This support network ensures that residents can maintain their independence while having access to assistance when needed. Whether it’s regular health screenings or transportation services, these resources can enhance overall quality of life.

Aging as a single person can be a fulfilling experience, especially when considering the numerous benefits offered at The Highlands. By allowing residents to choose their level of engagement and to create a lifestyle that aligns with their personal preferences, The Highlands can promote independence and foster a sense of autonomy and self-fulfillment. The combination of community, activities, and support can lead to improved emotional health. Socializing, staying active, and having access to services contribute to lower levels of stress and anxiety and can transform the aging journey into one filled with connection, growth, and joy. This can be particularly empowering, allowing Highlands’ residents to embrace this stage of life with positivity and confidence.
