Continuing Care Retirement Communities Are a Gift to Adult Children

“It’s the best gift my parents could have possibly given us at this stage of life.” Comments like this are common among adult children whose parents live in continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs), and it is no wonder. Research reveals that family members who care for an aging loved one often experience clinically significant signs of depression, have less time available to spend with friends and other family members, and sacrifice financially by taking time away from their careers or retiring early. A study of 3,700 family members of CCRC residents revealed that 93 percent feel that the CCRC is providing good services to their loved ones, and 77 percent would be likely or very likely to consider a CCRC for themselves in the future.

Among the benefits highlighted by families with loved ones in CCRCs, certain features stand out as particularly valuable, including availability of nursing care and healthcare services, access to a fitness center, housekeeping services, walking or biking paths, and emergency call systems. These features not only enhance the quality of life for residents but also provide peace of mind to families, knowing their loved ones have access to comprehensive care and support.

The Highlands at Wyomissing® is a highly regarded community that offers a continuum of care, which includes independent living, nursing care, memory care, personal care, and rehabilitation services—all under one roof. For families seeking a secure and supportive environment for their aging loved ones, The Highlands provides an exceptional solution that addresses both immediate and long-term needs, ensuring that residents have access to the appropriate level of assistance as their needs evolve. Independent living residents enjoy a vibrant, maintenance-free lifestyle with opportunities to socialize and engage in various activities. And when a resident requires more care over time, they can seamlessly transition to personal care, memory care, or nursing care without the stress of relocating to a new facility.

Amenities and Activities: One of the standout features of The Highlands at Wyomissing is its impressive range of amenities. The community includes beautifully landscaped walking paths, a fitness center with a heated, therapeutic pool, and a variety of recreational opportunities such as art and music, book clubs, lectures and educational series and gardening programs. These amenities encourage residents to stay active and engaged, both physically and mentally, improving overall wellness.

Dining and Housekeeping Services: The Highlands provides delicious and nutritious meals in three restaurant-style dining rooms, ensuring that residents enjoy a dining experience that meets their dietary preferences and health needs. In addition, housekeeping services are included to ensure that residents’ living spaces remain comfortable and well-maintained, allowing them more time to enjoy their daily lives.

Safety Features: The Highlands includes emergency call systems in each residence, enhancing safety and providing reassurance for both residents and their families. Not to mention, when it snows, The Highlands’ maintenance team, with help from the CEO and senior leadership, unites to clear residents’ cars, move vehicles and plow parking lots. The safety and well-being of our residents is our top priority.

Life Care: The Highlands’ Life Care contracts give residents a firm plan for the future that controls expenses for higher levels of care, if ever needed. Our Comprehensive (Type A) Contract enables residents to receive unlimited health services as needed, maintaining the same Residential Life monthly service fee no matter what level of care is needed. Our Modified (Type B) Contract is perfect for those who have long-term care insurance or may be interested in limited health services. Under this contract single residents receive up to 60 days of Personal Care and 60 days of Skilled Nursing Care at the Residential Living monthly service fee rate. Double occupants receive a shared total of 90 days of Personal Care and 90 days of Skilled Nursing at this rate. Only when these benefits are exhausted will residents pay the per diem rate for the appropriate level of care.

Choosing a continuing care retirement community such as The Highlands at Wyomissing not only ensures that loved ones are well cared for, but it also relieves family members of the emotional and financial strain often associated with caregiving. With its full range of services, supportive environment, and welcoming community, The Highlands at Wyomissing is an ideal choice for families who want the very best for their aging loved ones.
